Downstream Petroleum Refinery Corrosion Control & Materials Selection

Coruse Decription

This 5-day course provides an in-depth overview of materials selection strategies for managing corrosion in downstream oil and gas environments. Through classroom instruction and practical exercises, participants will gain an understanding of corrosion mechanisms, metallurgy principles, operating conditions, and material performance in order to optimize materials choice.

Throughout the course, detailed explanations about the requirements of applicable codes and standards such as API 571, NACE MR0103, NACE TM0177, NACE TM0284, API 934, NACE SP0472, API 970 and more will be provided.

Upon completion, participants will be able to effectively apply the learnings to choose appropriate materials of construction for various downstream oil and gas applications to mitigate corrosion and ensure asset integrity.

The course will benefit corrosion engineers, materials engineers, inspection personnel, and other professionals involved in material selection, corrosion management, and integrity assurance for downstream facilities.

Day 1 – The Essential Foundations

  • Corrosion fundamentals and mechanisms
  • Metallurgy of steels, nickel, copper, aluminum, and Titanium alloys
  • Review of applicable materials standards for piping, tubing, linepipe (CS, HRB Clad, MLP), pressure vessel’s plates, valves, forged, bends and elbows, etc.

Day 2 – Damage Mechanisms in Refinery and Gas Processing Plants

  • Review of crude oil refinery and gas processing plants damage mechanisms as per API 571

Day 3 – Corrosion Control and Materials Selection in Crude Oil Refinery– Part 1

  • Crude distillation and desalting
  • Fluid Catalytic Cracking(FCC) Units
